924s in endurance racing

Postby andy97 » Wed May 16, 2012 9:48 am

As mentioned in another thread, 3 x 924s took part in the 360MRC's annual 6 Clubman 6 hour race at Snetterton over the weekend of 5/6/7 May and performed exceptionally well. All 3 cars finished, with the top performing 924 finishing 6th overall (and 3rd in the "classic" standings) behind 3 x Caterhams (running in the race within a race "sports" race), a BMW 325 and a Mk2 Golf (both in the "classic" race).

The other 2 924s finished 10th and 12th overall (7th and 9th in the "classic" standings")

Light weight, reliability and good handling proved that these cars can perform well in these sorts of races and the top performing 924 also calculated its fuel consumption to be an excellent 17 mpg meaning that it could have done longer stints and maybe saved itself a pit stop over the 6 hours.

The top 924 was just a remarkable 10 laps behind the winning Caterham and 4 laps behind the "classic" race winning BMW at the end.

Maybe a few more could join in next year? There's also a 2 hour race on the Brands Hatch GP circuit on thwe w/e of 15/16 Sept organbised by the same people.

Hi Andy

They are cracking little cars! I have my car up for sale at the moment, and will be sad to see her go. Had some great fun over the past 5-years.

Any idea who were piloting the 924's for the ensurance race??

Mike Bell and Cliff Ryan drove the highest finishing car and a Smith A, Smith D and Mike Heath raced another one and the third one was raced by a Dear, Billett and Tyler.

The Bell/ Ryan car maybe to BRSCC/PDA spec but the other two, I think, were maybe more standard.

Its an ambition of mine - ok, another ambition of mine - to compete in the Britcar 24 hour at Silverstone. Maybe in a few years...?
