Hammond Hammers Home the Wins

Hammond Hammers Home the Wins

Alex Stocker's Boxster failed the noise test - requiring a transfer of exhaust system from TF's hire car "Blue Billy" before it would be permitted to qualify. Ed Hayes put his 986 on pole for Class A but Adam Southgate had his fastest qualifying lap excluded for track limits, so could well have challenged for the top spot. Richard Avery, showing much improved pace on our Oulton Park opening round took third, with Nick Hull 4th. Pip Hammond took the front of the Class C grid ahead of team mate Gavin Johnson; Ryan Lowry was third alongside Philip Waters.

Race 1
A major battle ensued for the lead of Class A between Hayes, Southgate and Avery in Race 1. With Hayes pulling away, Avery's Boxster started to smoke in the final laps and the Leighton Buzzard driver must have feared for a DNF. Avery taking advantage of 924 traffic to grab 2nd from Southgate.

Pip Hammond won in Class A by country mile. Contact between Peter Smith and Steve Potts almost leads to the latter contacting the Armco.

Andy Baker completed another Class B race, grabbing last-but-one spot head of Darren House. Jamie Callender was the only DNF, pulling his 924 into the pit lane just a lap shy of the flag with a broke distributor cap - but that's not the whole story...

Callender turns out to have an expired engine, but in true PDA style fellow Class C competitor Karl Rossin offers a spare engine and the team are quickly put to work to swap it in, ready for Sunday's races.

Race 2
Avery's Boxster is a retirement after just 4 laps. Alex Stocker launches off the line to land him 4th until he'd had the best of his tyres; Lawrence exits leaving Nick Hull to go through into 2nd but then he goes wide at Vale leaving Adam Southgate to take 2nd.

In Class C, Hammond is again on his own out front but the 924 fight consists of 7 cars all together. Ryan shuts the door on Gavin Johnson.

There's tyre smoke aplenty, especially from the front of Callender's car, as the 924s brake for Vale; Hayes is caught up in the midst of it. Hull loosing ground now on Southgate.

Hayes is now through the 924 gaggle where Rossin is now up to 2nd. Kevin Molyneaux pushing hard to catch

Hayes is on a clear run to the flag; Waters going squirrely at Vale as Lowry retires.

Hayes has lapped the entire field including Hammond. Southgate now well clear of Hull; Smith is challenging Waters in the 924s.

Karl Rossin is now third and Peter Smith 4th. Newbie Andy Porter in white Boxster #33 is now right up with Kevin Molyneaux for the tail of class A; Jamie Callendar neary looses it between Vale and Club.

Gavin Johnson is now 2nd with Rossin dropping back, seemingly happy for a third. #25 Potts is right on Water's tail as Molyneaux and Porter swap places.

At the fall of the flag its another win for Hayes from a smokey Avery and Southgate; Andy Baker finishes to take his Class B points; and in the 924s its Hammond ahead of team mate Johnson with Rossin third.

Race 3
Avery chooses not to race as the oil smoke emission witnessed in Races 1 and 2 isn't sorted and he doesn't want to risk further engine damage.

Hammond says he got his best start ever, carving through the pack and allowing him to go from 8th to first in Class C by the third corner.

Alex Stocker does well to hold on to his reverse-grid pole as a following huddle of Class A Boxsters fight among themselves in the initial laps.

Callender is doing well but picks up damage and has to work hard again to catch up. Philip Waters is black flagged in after a collision at Vale with Peter Smith's black car badly damaged the car's nose.

Southgate is close enough to challenge Hayes for the Class A lead for a few laps but just can't reel him in, so Hayes takes another win with Garry Lawrence third.

In the 924s, Steve Potts is subsequently deprived of 2nd behind Hammond for a double track limits infringement, gifting his place to Karl Rossin, with Pip's team mate Johnson third. Afterwards Pip says "I wish (Rick) Styrin could have been here as I think I could have beaten him".

Our next outing is at the challenging Lincolnshire circuit of Cadwell Park on 6/7th May where Andy Pritchard and Chris Valentine are due to return to the grid in 924s, and Garry Goodwin should make his Class A season debut.
