Season Finale
The 2008 season finished at Mallory Park this weekend with two very exciting races. Matt Davies finished the season as 2008 champion but the dominant car of the weekend, and also the unluckiest had to be that of Matt Upchurch. He secured fastest lap in both races but in Race 1 was tapped into a spin that caused him to drop to last place, from where he fought back to fifth by the finish. In Race 2 he had an unassailable lead when, 3 laps from the end, a minor distributor part broke bringing the car to a halt on the start/finish straight.
In fact it was a weekend of mechanical let downs and accidents with six non-finishers in race 2 and both Alfred Piesinger and Matt Davies ending up hitting the tyre wall at Gerrards. Alfred arrived at the high speed 180 degree righthander, only to find he had no brakes at all, with inevitable consequences. Matt arrived at the same place with nothing but neutral in the gear box, and without a gear was unable to slow the car sufficiently. It was his first non-finish of a successful season. Both drivers emerged unscathed.
The 2008 season was one of the best for the 924 Championship for years, with large grids and well turned out cars throughout the field. Everyone is now looking forward to next season which promises to build further on recent success.
