Rockingham Race Preview 16th / 17th July

The Design 911.com Porsche Championship moves down country this weekend to the Rockingham Motor Speedway.  Dave Clark (Boxster) and Steve Brown (924) shared a brace of wins at the last meeting at Oulton Park a few weeks back where the weather was less than kind providing one ‘wet’ and one ‘damp’ race.  Whilst the Boxster class saw two seconds for Richard Styrin and two thirds for Gerry Taylor, the 924’s did at least see some variation with Jayson Flegg and Alastair Kirkham sharing a second and third place each in both races.

In the championship standings, Dave Clark continues to pull away at the front in the Boxster class with the real battles going on for the other major places.  There are just 35 points between the second and eighth places, and the battle is definitely not over to fill those top spots.

In the 924’s you would have to be a brave man to predict an overall winner from the current standings with the pack led by Jayson Flegg, closing in on Alfred Piesinger at the top of the table.  The ‘wily’ Alfred will likely be pulling something out of the bag for this weekend’s meeting which sees one fast section of the circuit complementing the twisty infield section.  Climbing into 9th place in the standings, Rebecca Jackson’s style could suit the circuit this weekend, and the Reading driver could well finish inside the top six at the end of the season.

Better luck will hopefully be in evidence for the shared 924 of Geoffrey Hanson and Rupert Bullock this week after transmission failure saw the crew rush back to Yorkshire for a replacement box only for Victoria Motorsport’s Fudge and Eddie to have it fitted moments before the last race to find out that it also had a clutch/torque tube problem as well - disappointed faces all round after all the effort. There will also be a surprise entrant in the 924’s for Rockingham in the shape of Mark McAleer; a previous double champion the former 924 Championship.

In the Boxster class, watch out for the Bearman brothers, John and David, the pair are separated by just six points in the standings and one behind Rick Styrin in third place. Arjo Ghosh is looking for his chance to shine again as is Steve Boyles, just two points separate the two in the standings.
