Donington Park Preview - 14th / 15th May 2011

Donington Park on the 14th / 15th May will see the 2011 Design911.com Porsche Championship really hit its stride, as the first of three race meetings to take place in the space of just six weeks.

The recently re-opened Donington Park track should prove to be a real leveller, as very few of the current crop of drivers in the Championship have even driven the iconic circuit, let alone raced on it. Getting to grips quickly with the infamous Craner Curves, Redgate and Macleans corners will be crucial to a competitive lap time.

The first meeting of the 2011 campaign at Silverstone in April saw a total of 23 drivers line up on the grid, and the Donington meeting should see that figure increase to over 25, split equally between Boxsters and 924s. It bodes very well for the rest of the season....

In the Boxster class, reigning Champion Dave Clark picked up in 2011 where he left off in 2010, with a double victory at Silverstone. The performance of several other drivers at that meeting, however, suggests that it will become increasingly tough for Clark to repeat that dominance. Gerry Taylor, Steve Warburton and Richard Styrin are all gunning for their first victory in the Porsche Boxster.

Donington will also see the debut run for Dave Fairbrother, who will be representing the Hughes Racing Team in Dave Hughes absence.

In the 924 class, Jayson Flegg laid down his claim as the man to beat in 2011, as he also took an impressive double victory at Silverstone. As with Clark however, there is a queue of drivers already looking to take the fight to Flegg; the evidence of Silverstone suggests that, as in 2010, any one of Andrew Hannington, Steve Brown, Alfred Piesinger, Adam Croft, Alistair Kirkham or Mark Marshall could all be standing on the top step again in 2011.

Rookie Steven Potts will be joining the 924 ranks for Donington, having only obtained his race licence and bought a car a matter of weeks ago!

There will certainly be an air of excitement around Donington Park, as the next thrilling chapter of the Design911.com Porsche Championship is played out!
